Engine oil may change color during use or storage due to the following reasons and needs to be decolorized:

  1. Oxidation products: dark polymers (such as paint film and sludge) generated by high-temperature oxidation.
  2. Additive degradation: some additives (such as detergents) produce colored substances after decomposition.
  3. Contamination impurities: metal particles, dust or foreign pollutants.

1. Super strong adsorption capacity

Chemical adsorption: Oxygen-containing functional groups (such as carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups) can chemically adsorb polar oxidation products (such as ketones and aldehydes).

It preferentially adsorbs macromolecular pigments and polar impurities, but has less adsorption on base oil (non-polar hydrocarbons), thus reducing the loss of useful components.

How to Use Activated Carbon For Engine Oil Decolorization?

Preprocessing stage

 Heat the oil to 100-150°C to remove water and light volatiles.

Decolorization stage

Add wood powder activated carbon at 1%-5% of the weight of the engine oil (adjusted according to the oil quality). It can be used with white clay (bleaching earth) to enhance the adsorption effect.

Stirring adsorption: Heat the engine oil to 80-100°C and stir for 30-60 minutes to allow the activated carbon to fully adsorb impurities such as pigments and oxidation products in the engine oil.

Filtration separation stage

Use filter aids, vacuum filters, plate and frame filter presses or centrifuges to remove activated carbon and adsorbed impurities. After filtration, the color of the oil should become significantly lighter.

Test the color and acid value, and enter refining if they meet the standards, otherwise secondary treatment

Refining and tempering stage

Degassing and deodorization: Use vacuum distillation or gas stripping to remove odor and light components in the engine oil to improve quality.

Add antioxidants: If the engine oil needs to be stored or used for a long time, an appropriate amount of antioxidants can be added to improve stability.
