How to use activated carbon in fish tank? Activated carbon absorbs a wide range of dissolved contaminants such as chloramines, chlorine, tannins (which discolor the water), and phenols (which cause odors). It helps prevent aquarium water from yellowing and developing odors over time, and can also remove odors from your aquarium.
Activated carbon is mainly used to remove the following substances in aquariums:

Dissolved organic matter: such as organic matter produced by the decomposition of fish feces, bait residues and plant residues.

1. Choose the right activated carbon:

3. Placement:
Place the activated carbon in the filter, usually after the mechanical filter layer and before the biological filter layer, to ensure that the water flows through fully.
4. Dosage control:
The amount of activated carbon used depends on the size of the aquarium and the water quality. It is generally recommended to use 100-200 grams per 100 liters of water.
5. Regular replacement:
The adsorption capacity of activated carbon is limited. It is usually replaced every 2-4 weeks. The specific frequency depends on the water quality and usage.
6. Special circumstances:
When adding drugs or trace elements, the activated carbon should be temporarily removed to prevent it from adsorbing these substances and affecting the effect.
How long can activated carbon last in a fish tank aquarium?
After the activated carbon has absorbed enough compounds, it will eventually become saturated and will no longer be able to work. Therefore, the activated carbon must be replaced regularly, and once 1-6month is usually sufficient.

Ammonia and nitrite are the main toxins that affect tropical fish. However, activated carbon cannot remove ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Elevated ammonia, nitrite or nitrate levels must be addressed during the initial aquarium setup by water changes or other methods.
However, zeolite is the best choice for removing ammonia and nitrogen from aquariums.
