Activated Carbon For Fish Tank Aquarium-Heycarbons Manufacturer in China Since 2005

Activated Carbon For Fish Tank Aquarium

Activated carbon is made from a carbonaceous material that has been heat treated at high temperatures to create many tiny pores, greatly increasing its surface area. These tiny pores and large surface area allow the filter medium to capture a large amount of material, making it useful for removing pollutants from air and water. Different activated carbon manufacturing methods produce different forms of the material suitable for different uses.

In terms of morphology, common activated carbons include pelletized, granular, and powdered; Activated carbons from different raw materials may have different pore sizes. Common activated carbon raw materials include coal, coconut shell, and wood.

Among them, coconut shell granular activated carbon, pelletized activated carbon, and honeycomb activated carbon can be used in aquarium.

What does activated carbon remove in fish tank aquarium?

How to use activated carbon in fish tank? Activated carbon absorbs a wide range of dissolved contaminants such as chloramines, chlorine, tannins (which discolor the water), and phenols (which cause odors). It helps prevent aquarium water from yellowing and developing odors over time, and can also remove odors from your aquarium.

Activated carbon is mainly used to remove the following substances in aquariums:

1. Organic pollutants
Dissolved organic matter: such as organic matter produced by the decomposition of fish feces, bait residues and plant residues.

Odors and pigments: such as odors and yellow substances in water.

2. Chlorine and chloramines
Tap water treatment residues: Activated carbon can effectively adsorb chlorine and chloramines in water to protect fish and beneficial microorganisms.

3. Heavy metal ions
Trace heavy metals: such as copper, lead, zinc, etc., activated carbon can partially adsorb these harmful substances.

4. Drug residues
Therapeutic drugs: After using drug treatment in the aquarium, activated carbon can help remove residual drugs.

5. Other harmful substances
Phenols and sulfides: Activated carbon can adsorb some phenols and sulfides to improve water quality.

Activated Carbon in Fish Tank Aquarium Usage Method

Activated carbon can be used in both freshwater aquariums and saltwater aquariums. Its main function in aquariums is to absorb organic matter, pigments, drug residues and odors in the water, helping to keep the water clear.

Its usage is:

1. Choose the right activated carbon:
Make sure to use activated carbon specifically for aquariums and avoid industrial-grade products to prevent the release of harmful substances.

2. Clean the activated carbon:
Rinse with clean water before use to remove dust and prevent water pollution.

3. Placement:
Place the activated carbon in the filter, usually after the mechanical filter layer and before the biological filter layer, to ensure that the water flows through fully.

4. Dosage control:
The amount of activated carbon used depends on the size of the aquarium and the water quality. It is generally recommended to use 100-200 grams per 100 liters of water.

5. Regular replacement:
The adsorption capacity of activated carbon is limited. It is usually replaced every 2-4 weeks. The specific frequency depends on the water quality and usage.

6. Special circumstances:
When adding drugs or trace elements, the activated carbon should be temporarily removed to prevent it from adsorbing these substances and affecting the effect.

How long can activated carbon last in a fish tank aquarium?

calendar

After the activated carbon has absorbed enough compounds, it will eventually become saturated and will no longer be able to work. Therefore, the activated carbon must be replaced regularly, and once 1-6month is usually sufficient.

Longer replacement intervals will not harm the tank, but the activated carbon will gradually lose its ability to remove harmful substances from the water. If you see the water turn yellow or smell an odor in the tank, attention, it is time to replace the activated carbon.

Heycarbons Activated Carbon For Fish Tank Aquarium

Best Activated Carbon For Fish Tank Aquarium

Coconut shell granular activated carbon, pelletized activated carbon, and honeycomb activated carbon are all suitable for aquariums and can be selected and customized according to customer needs.

We recommend using heycarbons activated carbon. Heycarbons has six large dust removal equipment, and the activated carbon produced is clean. We still recommend that customers use it after backwashing. This ensures that the activated carbon does not turn the water black.

Heycarbons activated carbon has high strength: there are unique airflow carbonization method. The raw materials are carefully selected. Heycarbons activated carbon will not be crushed after long-term use.

Coconut Shell Granular Activated Carbon

Heycarbons only sells high-quality coconut shell granular activated carbon for freshwater and seawater aquariums. It can remove pigments from water and make the water clear.

Coconut shell activated carbon has strong adsorption capacity and its pore structure is suitable for removing organic matter, chlorine and odor from water, and has little impact on water quality.

Heycarbons coconut shell granular activated carbon has low ash content, clean and less flakes. Heycarbons factory is equipped with six large Slep furnaces, with advanced wind selection and grinding technology, and the activated carbon produced is high in hardness and strength.

Pelletized Activated Carbon

Coconut shell pelletized activated carbon is made of high-quality coconut shell charcoal powder as raw material and processed through a series of production processes. It has a black columnar appearance, high strength, easy regeneration, high iodine value, Microporous development, and good adsorption performance.

Honeycomb Activated Carbon

Honeycomb activated carbon is an activated carbon material with a honeycomb structure. It is usually made  of high-quality coal or coconut shell  or wood or mixing activated carbon powder as raw materials with a binder and preparing it through processes such as molding, carbonization and activation. It is named after its three-dimensional mesh or honeycomb-shaped pore structure.

This special structural design greatly increases its specific surface area and adsorption capacity, while also providing lower airflow resistance, making it an efficient adsorption material.

Why can’t powdered activated carbon be used?

Attention: We do not recommend using powdered activated carbon in aquariums, as it will be blown into the aquarium as a fine dust. It will turn the water in the fish tank black, and the powder will get into the fish’s gills and cause the fish to die.

Activated carbon in aquarium pros and cons

Activated carbon filter aquarium benefits

1. Water purification:

Impurity absorption: Activated carbon can effectively absorb organic matter, pigments, odors and harmful chemicals (such as chlorine and chloramine) in water to improve water quality.
Improve transparency: By removing suspended particles, activated carbon can make water clearer.

2. Drug residue treatment:

Drug removal: After fish disease treatment, activated carbon can help remove residual drugs to avoid harm to fish and beneficial bacteria.

3. Short-term water quality maintenance:

Emergency treatment: When water quality suddenly deteriorates, activated carbon can be used as an emergency measure to quickly improve water quality

Activated carbon aquarium drawbacks

1. Saturated adsorption:

Need to be replaced regularly: Activated carbon has limited adsorption capacity and may release adsorbed substances after saturation, so it needs to be replaced regularly (usually every 2-4 weeks).

2. Impact on nutrition:

Adsorption of beneficial substances: Activated carbon may adsorb trace elements and nutrients in the water, and long-term use may affect the health of aquatic plants and fish.

3. Does not adsorb all pollutants:

Limitations: Activated carbon is ineffective against inorganic pollutants such as ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and needs to rely on biological filtration.

4. May affect pH:

pH fluctuations: Some activated carbons may slightly change the pH value of water and affect sensitive fish.

Ammonia and nitrite are the main toxins that affect tropical fish. However, activated carbon cannot remove ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Elevated ammonia, nitrite or nitrate levels must be addressed during the initial aquarium setup by water changes or other methods.

However, zeolite is the best choice for removing ammonia and nitrogen from aquariums.
