Why Use Activated Carbon In Biogas H2S Removal?

Biogas is an important renewable energy source. It not only provides people with a clean and efficient form of energy, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, but also plays a key role in the resource utilization of organic waste.

In particular, hydrogen sulfide, as a toxic gas, will reduce the utilization value of biogas even at extremely low concentrations, and will also corrode back-end equipment such as biogas generators, boilers, and fuel cells.

Therefore, biogas desulfurization is particularly important. Activated carbon, as a renewable material with excellent adsorption capacity, plays a vital role in biogas purification.

How To Use Activated Carbon For Biogas H2S Removal

(1) Fe₂O₃ iron oxide rough desulfurization

The concentration of hydrogen sulfide H₂S is high, up to several thousand ppm. First, use iron oxide desulfurizer (Fe₂O₃) for rough desulfurization to reduce the H₂S concentration to 200-300 ppm.

In this process, iron oxide reacts with H₂S to generate iron sulfide and water, achieving desulfurization; after air reduction, the desulfurizer is regenerated.

Chemical reaction formula

  • Desulfurization: Fe₂O₃·H₂O+3H₂S=Fe₂S₃·H₂O+3H₂O
  • Regeneration: Fe₂S₃·H₂O+3/2O₂=Fe₂O₃·H₂O+3S

(2)Tannin extract rough desulfurization (wet method)

Tannin extract is a typical wet desulfurization process, which uses a solution formed by natural plant extract “tannin” (tannin) and trivalent iron (Fe³⁺) to absorb and oxidize hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in the gas.

Desulfurization: During the reaction, H₂S is oxidized by Fe³⁺ to elemental sulfur, while Fe³⁺ is reduced to Fe²⁺.

Regeneration: Fe²⁺ can be oxidized by air (O2) to regenerate Fe³⁺, so it can be recycled, which is low-cost and environmentally friendly.

(3) Activated carbon fine desulfurization

Activated carbon has an extremely high specific surface area and can efficiently physically adsorb hydrogen sulfide. Metal oxide(CuO, Fe₂O₃, MgO, ZnO) or alkaline substance(KI, NaOH, KOH) impregnated activated carbon can also be desulfurized through chemical reactions and catalytic oxidation, reducing the hydrogen sulfide concentration to no more than 1 ppm, achieving refined desulfurization.

Activated carbon can be used as the final “polishing” link to ensure that the concentration of H₂S of biogas is extremely low; it also has a certain adsorption capacity for other impurities (such as organic sulfur and odor).

Bituminous coal pelletized activated carbon impregnated with KOH

Using anthracite column impregnated with KOH to remove hydrogen sulfide, KOH reacts with hydrogen sulfide and the adsorption of activated carbon synergistically, this type of activated carbon has a higher working sulfur capacity than unimpregnated anthracite column activated carbon. Details are as follows:

(1) Alkaline absorption

H₂S reacts with KOH to first generate potassium hydrosulfate (KHS)

H2S+KOH→KHS+H2O

KHS further reacts with excess alkali to generate potassium sulfide (K₂S)

KHS+KOH→K2S+H2O

(2) Catalytic oxidation reaction

Further oxidation reaction in an aerobic environment (such as when containing a small amount of O₂)

K2S+O2+H2O→K2SO4 or 2KHS+O2→K2SO4+H2O

Oxygen can further oxidize the intermediate sulfide/hydrosulfate into potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄) or elemental sulfur. However, the products of the chemical reaction will gradually block the active pores and cause saturation, so the activated carbon for biogas purification needs to be replaced or regenerated.

The impregnation amount of KOH solution can be adjusted according to customer requirements.
