Necessity of Activated Carbon For Natural Gas
The importance of natural gas as an energy source is rapidly increasing, and natural gas projects have been developed since the 1960s. This gaseous hydrocarbon mixture is formed by the natural decomposition of organic matter. Its composition varies greatly from one gas field to another and at different geological formation periods. Methane CH4, is usually the main component.
When natural gas is stored underground at high pressure and temperature, the presence of sulfur-containing substances leads to the formation of hydrogen sulfide. These corrosive molecules must be removed before the natural gas leaves the storage facility and is injected into the pipeline network.

During the extraction and transportation of natural gas, the following impurities may be present in the natural gas:
- Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)
- Mercury vapor can cause corrosion in aluminum heat exchangers used in the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
- Moisture and carbon dioxide (CO₂)
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Activated carbon can be used to adsorb these impurities to prevent them from corroding equipment, polluting the environment, or affecting downstream process efficiency.

Activated Carbon For Natural Gas Process
1. Natural gas pretreatment
- Use filters to capture solid particles
- Use coolers or heat exchangers to reduce temperature
- Use triethylene glycol dehydration tower (TEG) and molecular sieve tower for dehydration
Natural gas is filtered, cooled and dehydrated to protect the back-end adsorption tower from moisture and blockage.
2. Natural gas enters the activated carbon adsorption tower
Natural gas passes through an adsorption tower filled with activated carbon filler at a certain pressure (usually 1–10 MPa). The adsorption tower is generally a vertical cylindrical tower; activated carbon is filled in layers inside, and a gas distributor is provided to ensure uniform flow.
- Physically adsorb volatile organic compounds and mercury using the microporous structure of activated carbon.
- For hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfur, impregnated activated carbon (such as alkali modification or metal oxide loading) can be used for chemical adsorption.
Activated carbon needs to be regenerated or replaced regularly.
3. Purified natural gas output
The impurity concentration of natural gas after adsorption treatment is greatly reduced, meeting the requirements of process gas or transportation. It can then be used in gas turbines, boiler combustion, city gas supply, etc., or enter downstream hydrogen production and synthesis gas systems.
4. System switching and standby
To ensure continuous operation of the system, 2 to 3 parallel tower groups are usually set up for adsorption and the switching valve system controls the flow direction;
When one tower adsorption tends to be saturated, it can be switched to the standby tower for adsorption to maintain uninterrupted production. The saturated tower enters the regeneration or replacement stage.
5. Regeneration or replacement of activated carbon
- Regeneration method (applicable to regenerative systems): Desorb impurities by heating (hot air or steam); then remove the desorbed material by gas purge (such as hot air or nitrogen) to restore the performance of activated carbon.
- Replacement method (applicable to disposable activated carbon): Remove the saturated activated carbon and replace it with new carbon. Used activated carbon is handled in accordance with hazardous waste regulations.

Activated Carbon For Natural Gas H₂S Removal
Activated carbon is an efficient and economical method for removing hydrogen sulfide H2S from natural gas. The surface of activated carbon has rich pore structure and high specific surface area, which can physically adsorb H2S molecules.
Impregnated activated carbon: Activated carbon can also be impregnated with alkaline substances (NaOH, KOH, Na2CO2) or oxidants (KMnO2, Fe2O2) to convert H2S into elemental sulfur, sulfate or other sulfides to achieve H2S removal.
Activated Carbon For Natural Gas H₂S Removal Process
(1) Fixed bed adsorption tower: Natural gas passes through a tower filled with activated carbon, H₂S is adsorbed, and the sulfur content at the outlet of the purified gas needs to be monitored.
(2) Multi-stage series connection: High concentration H₂S can be connected in series with multiple towers to extend the adsorption cycle.
(3) Regeneration or replacement:
- Impregnated activated carbon has better adsorption effect, but it is generally not regenerable; it needs to be replaced after saturation.
- Non-impregnated type can recover sulfur through thermal regeneration (150~400℃) or steam purging, but the adsorption capacity gradually decreases after regeneration.
Impregnated Activated Carbon For H₂S Removal Chemical Reaction
(1) KMnO₄ impregnated activated carbon
- Potassium permanganate KMnO₄ impregnated on the surface of activated carbon can react chemically with H₂S to generate elemental sulfur, manganese dioxide MnO₂ and KOH.
H₂S + KMnO₄ → S↓ + MnO₂ + KOH

Mercury Removal From Natural Gas By Activated Carbon
The presence of elemental mercury in wellhead natural gas has been well documented. Mercury-induced corrosion of LNG aluminum alloy cryogenic exchangers has led to many instances of equipment failure, and mercury present in a hydrogen, syngas or hydrocarbon gas stream shortens the useful lives of many precious metal catalysts.
From both worker safety and environmental perspectives, mercury removal may be necessary. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set exposure regulations for inorganic mercury compounds, which are also regulated as an air toxin under the Clean Air Act Amendments. In many cases, it is important to remove mercury from the source to minimize process emissions.
Heycarbons Best Activated Carbon For Natural Gas Mercury Removal
Heycarbons recommends using sulfur-loaded extruded activated carbon for mercury removal from natural gas. Granular activated carbon is also acceptable. The base carbon is made from select grades of bituminous coal and suitable binders to create the unique pore structure and superior hardness necessary for the intended service.
Activation is controlled to impart a pore structure that will both accept substantial quantities of impregnant and maintain access for the gas being treated to the complex pore structure.
After activation, the sulfur is distributed in a thin layer over the extensive internal surface area of the carbon. This provides it with the unique properties required for the removal of elemental and organic mercury from natural gas, air, and by-product hydrogen streams.

Activated Carbon For Natural Gas VS Biogas
Gas composition
Natural gas: The main component is methane, with sulfides dominated by hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), usually in low concentrations (ppm level), and may contain traces of organic sulfur (e.g., mercaptans, mercaptans). Other impurities are low (e.g. CO₂, controlled moisture content).
Biogas: In addition to methane, it contains a large amount of water vapor, high CO₂ concentration (30%-50%), fluctuating H₂S concentration, and many impurities.
Selection of activated carbon
Natural gas usually requires high selective adsorption of sulfur, emphasizing the fine adsorption properties of activated carbon.
- Commonly use ordinary activated carbon or activated carbon impregnated with alkaline substances (e.g. KOH, NaOH) to catalyze the oxidation of H₂S to monomer sulfur or sulfate.
- For organic sulfur, pore size-matched activated carbon or metal oxide-modified carbon (e.g., ZnO-loaded) is preferred.
Biogas
- Biogas requires activated carbon that is more resistant to moisture (e.g., hydrophobically modified or macroporous structure) to avoid water clogging the pores.
- At high H₂S concentrations, iron oxide impregnated carbon or biodesulfurization pretreatment may be required to reduce costs.
Other aspects
Natural gas desulfurization systems are more stable and have a longer activated carbon life.
Biogas
- Air velocity and contact time: Biogas usually requires lower airspeed (longer contact time) or multi-stage adsorption due to high H₂S concentration and impurities.
- Regeneration frequency: Activated carbon in biogas desulphurization is more easily saturated and has shorter regeneration or replacement intervals.
- Higher costs: Biogas desulphurization often faces higher operating costs (due to high impurities and rapid adsorbent depletion) and requires a combination of processes (e.g., iron oxide desulphurization + activated carbon refinement).
