Activated Carbon for Sugar Sucrose Color Removal

Sucrose (chemical formula: C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁) is a natural disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose, and is one of the most important sweeteners in the world. Sugarcane (tropical/subtropical crops) and sugar beets (temperate crops) are the two main sources of sucrose, of which sugarcane sugar accounts for about 80% of global production and beet sugar accounts for 20%.
Sucrose is widely used in food, medicine, chemical industry and other fields. It is not only used as a sweetener in beverages, candies, baked goods, etc., but also used in pharmaceutical excipients, fermentation industry, biofuels (such as ethanol production) and feed additives.
During the refining process of sucrose, the sugar solution often contains natural pigments (such as polyphenols, carotenoids), colloidal impurities, and caramel pigments produced during the processing process, which will affect the color, purity and taste of the sugar. Therefore, activated carbon decolorization becomes a key step.
What is the Use of Activated Carbon in the Cane Sugar Industry?
Activated carbon, with its highly developed pore structure and huge specific surface area, can efficiently adsorb pigments, colloids and odorous substances, significantly improving the purity and whiteness of the sugar solution.
Compared with chemical bleaching agents (such as sulfur dioxide), activated carbon decolorization is safer and more environmentally friendly, and does not introduce harmful residues, meeting food safety standards.
In addition, activated carbon decolorization can also optimize the crystallization process of cane sugar, improve yield and product quality. Despite the existence of alternative technologies such as ion exchange resins and membrane filtration, activated carbon is still the most mainstream decolorization method in the sucrose industry due to its high cost-effectiveness and mature process.
In the future, as the food industry continues to increase its quality requirements, the modification and regeneration technology of activated carbon will further promote the efficient and sustainable development of the cane sugar industry.
How to Use Activated Carbon for Sucrose Decolorization
How to Decolorize with Activated Carbon?
Pretreatment: It’s clarified with lime, and then concentrated and crystallized to produce preliminary refined sugar, called raw sugar, with a purity of about 96%.
The washed crystals are dissolved in water to become 50%~60% sugar solution. Next, it is clarified with lime again, mainly by adding lime to make the sugar solution slightly alkaline. Then it is neutralized with phosphoric acid, and the resulting calcium phosphate can absorb impurities and be filtered out.
Activated carbon adsorption: Add sugar solution directly (the dosage is usually 0.1%~2% of the mass of the sugar solution), stir for 30~60 minutes, and maintain a certain temperature of 50-80°C to improve the adsorption efficiency.
Filtration: After decolorization, the sugar solution needs to be finely filtered or centrifuged to remove the activated carbon and its adsorbed pigments and impurities before entering the crystallization process.
How to Decolorize Sugar Sucrose Using Other Measures?
Ion exchange resin decolorization
Ion exchange resin can remove pigments and impurities from syrup through ion exchange.
- Resin treatment: The syrup is passed through a column containing a specific ion exchange resin, and the functional groups on the resin will adsorb the pigment molecules in the syrup.
- Elution: Use a suitable eluent (such as water or dilute acid) to elute the resin and regenerate the resin for next use.
Membrane filtration
Membrane filtration technology removes pigments and small molecule impurities from syrup by selectively passing through the membrane.
- Ultrafiltration: Use ultrafiltration membrane to remove large molecule impurities.
- Nanofiltration: Use nanofiltration membrane to further remove small molecule pigments and impurities.

Activated Carbon for Cane Sugar Decolorization Important Indicators
1. Methylene blue value reflects the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for medium molecular organic matter, and is often used to evaluate the adsorption effect on dyes, pigments, etc.
2. Iodine value: reflects the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for small molecular organic matter, and is often used to evaluate the adsorption effect on volatile organic matter, small molecular pigments, etc.
3. Molasses value: directly measures the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for pigments in sugar solution. The higher the molasses value, the better the decolorization effect.
4. Particle size: The smaller the particle size, the faster the adsorption speed, but too small may cause filtration difficulties.
5. Sugar solution pH value: 9-11. When using activated carbon for decolorization, the pH value of the sugar solution is very important. When it is acidic, it will easily cause the conversion of sugar but the decolorization effect will be good, so it is better to control the pH>7, or neutral. Dilute sugar solution is conducive to decolorization, but it will increase the evaporation load in the future. Generally, the concentration is controlled at about 50%. Temperature is 70~80℃.
One issue that should be noted is that activated carbon will cause the pH value to decrease during the decolorization process, which means that invert sugar will increase. Therefore, the pH value of the sugar solution should be checked at any time. The pH of coal-based granular activated carbon is alkaline 8-11.
6. Ash content: The lower the ash content, the higher the purity of activated carbon and the better the decolorization effect.
Therefore, when selecting activated carbon, the adsorption capacity, particle size, pH value and ash content should be considered comprehensively to achieve the best decolorization effect.
