Heycarbons is a professional activated carbon supplier for ozone removal from gas, introducing mechanism, customized carbon solution, applications in this article.

Why Use Activated Carbon to Destroy Ozone from Gas?

While ozone can protect us from ultraviolet radiation at high altitudes (such as the stratosphere), it is a strong oxidizing pollutant near the ground.

As a strong oxidant, even at low concentrations, ozone can irritate the respiratory tract, damage lung tissue, and worsen asthma, causing respiratory harm. Therefore, it is essential to reduce ozone concentrations to safe levels in indoor air treatment, laboratory exhaust, and industrial emissions.

Ozone’s oxidizing power can cause rubber seals to age and crack, plastics to become brittle, and metal surfaces to corrode. Using activated carbon to remove ozone in precision instruments, electronic equipment, or piping systems can extend equipment lifespan and reduce maintenance costs.

Additionally, ground-based ozone is a major component of photochemical smog, which affects plant growth, disrupts ecosystems, exacerbates air pollution, and degrades air quality. Therefore, ozone must be removed before emissions.

Does Activated Carbon Remove Ozone?

Mechanisms of Activated Carbon Ozone Removal

The mechanism by which activated carbon removes ozone is not merely physical adsorption; more importantly, it involves catalytic decomposition. Heycarbons activated carbon has abundant active sites on its surface: oxygen-containing functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl, etc.) and unsaturated carbon atoms (defect sites).

These sites catalyze the decomposition of ozone into O₂, with the chemical reaction: 2O3 → 3O2. Introducing catalytic active sites onto the activated carbon surface accelerates the ozone decomposition reaction.

Heycarbons Activated Carbon Product for Ozone Removal

For ozone removal from industrial exhaust gases, coal-based pelletized catalytic activated carbon, loaded with alkaline, metal oxide, or composite reagents, is generally recommended.

Heycarbons offers specialized products designed for ozone removal, with the base carbon typically being coal-based pelletized activcated carbon. The typical technical specifications are as follows:

Project Specification
Shape Pellet (Φ3–4 mm)
Iodine value 800-1100 mg/g
Bulk Density 0.45–0.55 g/cm3
Hardness ≥95%
Moisture ≤5%
Ash 8-12%
pH 8–11 (important for ozone decomposition)
4mm pelletized activated carbon2

Alkaline impregnated activated carbon (impregnated with KOH, NaOH, K2CO3) provides alkaline sites, which can accelerate the catalytic decomposition of O3 into O2. Compared with ordinary activated carbon, it is more efficient and has a longer service life.

Heycarbons also offers metal oxide-impregnated activated carbon, which features higher catalytic activity and greater stability, making it more suitable for medium to high concentrations of O3.

For metal oxide-impregnated carbon, we recommend MnO2 impregnation, which is the most common and relatively inexpensive option among metal oxide-impregnated carbons.

For ozone decomposition, composite impregnated 4mm pelletized activated carbon  can be impregnated with MnO₂ 5% + KOH 3% or MnO₂ 6% + KOH 4%, balancing catalytic and alkaline sites to achieve both adsorption efficiency and cost.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Activated Carbon for Gaseous Ozone Removal

Activated carbon is cheaper than dedicated ozone catalysts (such as honeycomb MnO₂ and precious metal catalysts).

However, activated carbon used for ozone treatment has fewer regeneration cycles and is a consumable material, lacking the long lifespan of dedicated catalysts.

Industrial waste gas treatment is the most common and mature application of using activated carbon to remove ozone. Activated carbon decomposes ozone into oxygen through a catalytic reaction, preventing the formation of photochemical smog. This method is suitable for large-volume and continuous operation.

Heycarbons provides customized chemical loading solutions based on customers’ actual needs and application scenarios, bringing customers more efficient and stable application performance.

Activated Carbon for Ozone Removal Other Applications

In addition to industrial exhaust gas treatment, Heycarbons can also customize activated carbon solutions for the following industries:

Drinking water and beverages

Activated carbon can be used in drinking water treatment or CO2 purification systems for beverages; see the link for details:

Unreacted ozone can enter the gas phase. Activated carbon can decompose the collected ozone tail gas, preventing ozone escape and meeting emission standards.

Laboratory Applications

In laboratories, small activated carbon adsorption columns can be used for ozone-involved chemical reaction experiments or for treating exhaust gases from gas-phase reaction devices, preventing ozone leakage and protecting laboratory personnel.

Medical and Disinfection Applications

In the medical and disinfection fields, ozone can be used to disinfect spaces or sterilize medical devices. After disinfection, the ozone is passed through an activated carbon filtration system to quickly remove residual ozone, ensuring safe entry for personnel.

How to Remove Ozone Using Activated Carbon?

The use of activated carbon to remove ozone from gases essentially relies on its strong adsorption capacity and surface catalytic decomposition ability to convert ozone (O₃) into oxygen (O₂). The following provides a systematic introduction to the ozone treatment process and key points in industrial exhaust gases.

1. Preatment

Before the gas enters the activated carbon, it must undergo simple pretreatment: use a filter to remove dust, control the humidity (moderate humidity is better), and reduce the temperature to below 50°C. These treatment steps can prevent clogging of the activated carbon pores and improve efficiency.

2. Activated Carbon Adsorption/Decomposition

The gas passes through a device containing activated carbon (fixed-bed adsorption tower or filter). During this stage, ozone is adsorbed onto the surface of the activated carbon and simultaneously undergoes a catalytic decomposition reaction with the impregnated material, decomposing O3 into O2: 2O3 → 3O2

3. Secondary Safety Measures

To prevent ozone leakage, most factories implement safety measures, typically including: a secondary activated carbon layer, online ozone detectors, and alarm systems, thereby adding multiple layers of safety design for ozone emissions.

4. Emissions after compliance with standards

The ozone concentration in the treated gas is significantly reduced, typically achieving a removal rate of over 90%. The gas is ultimately released into the atmosphere or enters a subsequent treatment system.

5. Activated Carbon Replacement or Regeneration

Over time, the surface of activated carbon can oxidize or become clogged, reducing its adsorption capacity. Regular replacement or thermal regeneration is necessary.
