What is Zinc Acetate Catalytic Activated Carbon?

Zinc acetate catalytic carbon refers to a catalytic material in which zinc acetate (Zn(CH3COO)2) is supported on activated carbon. It is a typical metal salt supported activated carbon catalyst.

The resulting vinyl chloride (VCM) can be further polymerized to produce polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic.

Why Activated Carbon Is Used as a Catalyst Support?

Advantages of Zinc Acetate Catalytic Activated Carbon for VCM Production

Compared to traditional mercuric chloride (HgCl₂) catalysts, zinc acetate catalytic carbon does not contain highly toxic heavy metals such as mercury, effectively avoiding mercury pollution and exhibiting better environmental performance.

Raw materials are widely available, resulting in relatively low production costs.

The process technology is relatively mature; among existing mercury-free catalytic systems, zinc-based catalysts are considered one of the routes closest to industrial application.

Disadvantages of Zinc Acetate Catalytic Activated Carbon for VCM Production

Despite its superior environmental performance, its overall catalytic performance is still lower than that of traditional mercury-based catalysts.

The relatively low catalytic activity of zinc acetate catalytic carbon leads to lower conversion and yield of vinyl chloride (VCM) compared to HgCl₂ catalytic systems.

During long-term operation, it may also experience rapid activity decay and insufficient stability.
