Heycarbons Pellet Activated Carbon

What is Pellet Activated Carbon?

Pelletized activated carbon (also known as columnar activated carbon or extruded activated carbon) is a cylindrical activated carbon produced by extrusion molding. Common diameters include 0.9/1.5/2/3/4/5/6/8 mm, etc. It is widely used in gas and liquid purification due to its strong adsorption performance, high strength, good wear resistance, and suitability for continuous operation.

How to Make Activated Carbon Pellets?

Heycarbons pellet activated carbon is made from high-quality anthracite, coconut shell, or wood. The raw materials are ground into powder and mixed with a binder (coal tar and coconut shell environmentally friendly binder).

Then, the diameter of the activated carbon is determined according to customer requirements. It is directly extruded under high pressure using a die of the appropriate size to obtain continuous columnar activated carbon, which is then cut to the required length.

After drying, the formed activated carbon rods are carbonized under anaerobic conditions, followed by activation with high-temperature steam to form a well-developed porous structure. Use the sieve to remove excessively short pelletized activated carbon and dust.

Pellet activated carbon can also be impregnated with chemicals to enhance its adsorption performance. It can be impregnated with acid to remove alkaline substances, impregnated with alkali to remove acidic substances, or impregnated with metal oxides, such as impregnation with mercuric chloride (HgCl2) as a catalyst or loading sulfur to remove mercury.

You can learn how the Heycarbons factory produces and controls the quality of activated carbon in the following videos.

Features of Pellet Activated Carbon

Pelletized activated carbon has the following characteristics:

  • Strong adsorption capacity: Pellet activated carbon has a high specific surface area and well-developed micropores.
  • High mechanical strength
  • Low pressure drop: Reduces airflow resistance, facilitates gas passage, improves system efficiency, and is particularly suitable for treating large volumes of waste gas.
  • Long service life: Can be repeatedly used through thermal or steam regeneration, resulting in a long service life and reduced operating costs.

Comparison of Pellet Activated Carbon from Different Raw Materials

Coconut shell pellet activated carbon is known for its extremely well-developed micropores, very low ash content, and stable operation. It is suitable for high-intensity requirements such as solvent recovery, as well as high-purity gas purification, and is suitable for systems with high performance and lifespan requirements.

Coal-based columnar activated carbon is renowned for its well-developed micropores, large adsorption capacity, high mechanical strength, and resistance to various working conditions. It is the preferred carrier for industrial gas purification and chemically impregnated activated carbon, balancing performance and economy. It has a high capacity for adsorbing small molecule gases (H₂S, SO₂, NO₂, CO, and light hydrocarbons).

Wood-based pellet activated carbon is characterized by its well-developed mesopores, low ash content, and fast adsorption kinetics. It is particularly suitable for VOCs, odors, and as a chemical impregnation carrier, making it a preferred material for gas-phase environmental remediation that offers “fast response and stable results”.

Advantages of Heycarbons in Producing Pellet Activated Carbon

For coal pellet activated carbon, Heycarbons uses high-quality, low-ash, low-sulfur, and low-phosphorus anthracite as raw material. Different types of raw coal can also be blended to meet specific customer applications and high-performance requirements of a project.

Heycarbons pelletized activated carbon is exceptionally hard and resistant to mechanical damage due to its unique bonding and extrusion process.

Heycarbons pellet activated carbon uses a unique airflow carbonization method instead of carbon combustion, resulting in a smoother, cleaner, and stronger product.

Heycarbons employs specialized cooling equipment, eliminating the need for ground cooling and ensuring that the activated carbon pellets don’t fall to the ground throughout the process, remaining free of impurities.

Applications of Pelletized Activated Carbon

Pellet activated carbon, due to its high strength, large specific surface area, and excellent adsorption kinetics, is mainly used for gas-phase (waste gas/air) adsorption.

1. Industrial waste gas treatment

  • VOC removal
  • H2S removal (biogas desulfurization, natural gas purification)
  • Deodorization (removal of odorous gases such as hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, and ammonia from wastewater treatment plants, waste incineration plants, etc.)

2. Gas purification

3. Solvent recovery

It adsorbs and recovers organic solvents such as acetone, benzene, alcohols, and gasoline from exhaust gases emitted from industries such as printing, coating, film, and fiber.

4. Catalyst support

5. Impregnated activated carbon

Can be impregnated with specific chemicals such as acidic, alkaline, or metal oxides to remove specific target substances. For example, sulfur-loaded mercury removal.

To end with:

The above introduces the application areas of columnar activated carbon. It is worth noting that:

For pelletized activated carbon of different sizes, 3mm/4mm are more suitable for gas treatment, 1.5mm/2mm are for water treatment, and 0.9mm pellet activated carbon is suitable for gas mask application.
