Heycarbons Solutions for Hydrogen Cyanide HCN Removal
Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a highly toxic gas commonly encountered in industrial processes such as high-temperature reactions, combustion, coal processing, and chemical manufacturing. Given its extreme toxicity and the potential risks it poses to human health, equipment safety, and environmental compliance, the efficient removal of HCN is critical in many industrial applications.
Heycarbons offers high-performance activated carbon solutions specifically designed to remove HCN and other toxic gases, helping enterprises achieve safer operations and meet emission control requirements.
Heycarbons Activated Carbon Product for HCN Removal
HCN is a small-molecule, weakly acidic, polar gas. Its adsorption capacity on activated carbon is very low when relying solely on physical adsorption. Generally, alkaline or metal oxide impregnated activated carbon is used, converting HCN into low-toxicity or stable substances through chemical reactions.
Heycarbons Honeycomb Activated Carbon for HCN Removal
A customer, who needed to remove hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas generated during a jewelry cyanide plating process, found Heycarbons through our website and specifically requested the purchase of impregnated honeycomb activated carbon.
Considering the HCN gas molecular properties-as well as factors such as humidity, temperature, air flow rate, target removal efficiency, equipment space limitations, and long-term operational stability-Heycarbons recommended the Heysorbcarb® water-resistant impregnated honeycomb activated carbon to the customer.
Heysorbcarb®-HEYHCAC impregnated honeycomb activated carbon specification
Heysorbcarb® honeycomb activated carbon specification is as follows:
- 100*100*100 mm, 100 cpsi
- Impregnated with CuO+KOH (10% content)
- HCN removal efficiency>95%
- HCN adsorption capacity about 30-40%
Heysorbcarb® honeycomb activated carbon features a well-developed microporous and mesoporous structure, excellent regeneration performance, and high mechanical strength. Thanks to its high adsorption capacity and enhanced chemical reactivity—achieved through impregnation modification—it is widely used for the purification and treatment of toxic gases such as HCN.
Heycarbons Coconut Shell Granular Activated Carbon for HCN Removal
Besides honeycomb activated carbon, pelletized activated carbon (0.9-1mm) and coconut shell granular activated carbon impregnated with metal oxides are also suitable for HCN removal in gas treatment. The choice primarily depends on the type of gas treatment equipment the customer uses.
To meet the need for a CBRN gas mask filtration system, a customer purchased Heycarbons impregnated activated carbon to remove HCN (hydrogen cyanide) and other harmful gaseous impurities.
Based on the customer’s requirements for the gas components to be removed, the design of the filtration equipment, operating conditions, and adsorption performance requirements, Heycarbons selected 16–30 mesh impregnated granular activated carbon as the filter medium. This product achieves highly efficient removal of the target gas through the physical adsorption of activated carbon and the chemical reaction and catalytic effect of the impregnated components.
Since the customer’s gas mask application involves the synergistic removal of HCN (hydrogen cyanide) and various other gaseous impurities, a multi-component impregnation system of activated carbon products is required to meet the complex gas filtration needs.
Given the specific nature of the client’s project and the confidentiality requirements of the technical solutions, this article will not disclose other target removal substances or specific impregnation formulas. If you are interested in CBRN protective impregnated activated carbon, gas mask filtration systems, or toxic gas filtration solutions, please contact Heycarbons. We will provide professional technical support and customized product solutions based on your application needs.
Heycarbons Anthracite Pelletized Activated Carbon for HCN Removal
Another customer wanted to purchase activated carbon for gas masks. Before placing the order, Heycarbons provided the customer with samples of different specifications free of charge for comparison.
Customer feedback indicated that coconut shell activated carbon was less effective than coal-based activated carbon in treating HCN.
Coal-based activated carbon has a larger pore size than coconut shell activated carbon, and the pore size decreases after impregnation. Generally using iodine values above 1000 mg/g.
In addition, because toxic gas molecules are relatively small, impregnated activated carbon (pellet 0.9-1 mm) from anthracite is generally used when selecting activated carbon.
Similarly, the customer uses impregnated activated carbon for gas masks, primarily to remove HCN, as well as other gases, so a variety of substances need to be impregnated. To protect customer privacy, detailed information on gas impurity composition and impregnating substances is not disclosed here. Please get in touch with Heycarbons for more information.
We can also customize impregnated activated carbon solutions based on the specific gases you require to remove.

Heycarbons Impregnated Activated Carbon for HCN Removal Principle
Taking honeycomb activated carbon impregnated with KOH + CuO as an example, we will introduce how Heycarbons activated carbon effectively removes HCN through chemical reactions.
On the one hand, as an alkaline active component, KOH reacts with the acidic gas HCN, converting gaseous HCN into a stable cyanide salt and thereby achieving irreversible capture: HCN + KOH → KCN + H2O
The resulting potassium cyanide (KCN) is immobilized within the pores and on the surface active sites of the activated carbon, enhancing the material’s adsorption capacity and removal efficiency for HCN.
On the other hand, CuO has the ability to react with the cyano group (CN⁻) to form stable copper-cyanide compounds, thereby further facilitating the chemical fixation of HCN: CuO + 2HCN → Cu(CN)2 + H₂O
The resulting copper-cyanide compounds (such as Cu(CN)2) are highly stable and remain on the activated carbon surface, thereby enhancing its HCN capture capacity.
Furthermore, in the presence of oxygen, CuO acts as a catalytically active center that promotes the oxidative decomposition of HCN: HCN + O2 → CO2 + N2 + H2O
By lowering the activation energy, accelerating electron transfer, and providing active sites for the redox reaction, CuO enables the continuous catalytic conversion of HCN.
A composite impregnation technique combining alkaline components and metal oxides endows activated carbon with simultaneous capabilities for physical adsorption, chemical fixation, and catalytic conversion, thereby significantly enhancing the capture efficiency for acidic toxic gases such as HCN.
Impregnated Honeycomb Activated Carbon for HCN Removal Process
The process for treating HCN exhaust gas generated during the jewelry cyanide plating process using impregnated honeycomb activated carbon is as follows:
HCN gas generated by the electroplating tank is collected by a side-draft hood and conveyed through ductwork into the treatment system.
The gas first passes through a filtration and acid mist treatment unit to remove metal particles, liquid droplets, and acid mist generated during the electroplating process, thereby preventing the depletion of the alkaline impregnant in the activated carbon.
Subsequently, the gas flows through a honeycomb activated carbon filter unit, where KOH+CuO impregnated honeycomb carbon treats the HCN hydrogen cyanide through a combination of physical adsorption and chemical reaction.
The treated gas is then discharged by a fan.
