Heycarbons Activated Carbon to Australia

Coal Activated Carbon for PFAS Removal from Soil

Activated Carbon to Australia Customer Case

  • Customer Country: Australia
  • Port of Discharge: Melbourne, Australia
  • Quantity: 20 tons,  22 tons, 44 tons, 44 tons
  • Type: Coal granular and powdered activated carbon
  • Application: PFAS Removal from Soil

PFAS contamination in soil is increasingly becoming a formidable environmental challenge for remediation contractors, landfill operators, industrial sites, and government cleanup projects. Given the persistence of PFAS compounds and their potential to migrate from soil into groundwater, many projects require reliable adsorbent materials to reduce PFAS mobility and achieve long-term soil stabilization.

In early March of this year, Heycarbons supplied a batch of coal-based granular and powdered activated carbon to an Australian client for a soil remediation project aimed at removing PFAS. The customer reported that the activated carbon provided by Heycarbons performed well in application.

Subsequently, the client placed four additional orders—in late March, April, and June—purchasing the following two products in each instance: coal-based granular activated carbon and powdered activated carbon.

Coal Granular and Powdered Activated Carbon for PFAS Removal from Soil

PFAS can enter the soil through pathways such as firefighting foam, industrial discharges, landfill leachate, wastewater sludge or biosolids, contaminated irrigation water, and atmospheric deposition. Once in the soil, PFAS tend to persist for long periods, gradually leaching into groundwater or entering the food chain, and posing risks to human health.

To prevent leaching and groundwater contamination, clients often choose coal-based activated carbon for soil remediation: it adsorbs PFAS from soil pore water onto the pores of activated carbon, thereby reducing its mobility.

Principles of Coal-based Activated Carbon for PFAS Adsorption

Coal-based activated carbon is suitable for PFAS removal primarily because its pore size distribution aligns well with the molecular structure of PFAS.

PFAS molecules typically consist of a hydrophobic fluorinated carbon chain and a hydrophilic charged functional group. The micropore structure of coal-based activated carbon provides abundant adsorption sites for long-chain PFAS, while a certain proportion of mesopores serves as mass-transfer channels, facilitating the diffusion of PFAS from the aqueous phase or soil pore water into the interior of the activated carbon particles.

During the adsorption process, the fluorinated carbon chains of PFAS molecules engage in non-polar interactions—including hydrophobic interactions, van der Waals forces, and pore-filling effects—with the hydrophobic surface of activated carbon, resulting in the adsorption and entrapment of PFAS within the carbon’s pore structure. Due to their higher hydrophobicity and stronger affinity for the carbon surface, long-chain PFAS typically exhibit stronger adsorption characteristics than short-chain PFAS.

Granular VS Powdered Activated Carbon for PFAS Removal from Soil

Heycarbons powdered activated carbon and granular activated carbon can play complementary roles.

PAC powdered activated carbon consists of fine particles with a large surface area, making it highly suitable for incorporation into soil or amendment mixtures to facilitate rapid contact with contaminants. However, it is difficult to recover and prone to migration with water, potentially resulting in the formation of PFAS-laden sludge or fine-particle residues.

GAC granular activated carbon has larger particles and a slower adsorption rate. However, it offers low pressure drop, good hydraulic stability, resistance to washout, and ease of replacement, making it well-suited for long-term, continuous operation. It has a lower cost.

Using both products in tandem provides engineers with greater flexibility in project design, particularly when dealing with variations in site soil conditions, PFAS distribution, moisture content, and mixing methods.
