What is Coal-based Granular Activated Carbon GAC?
Coal-based granular activated carbon is a porous adsorption material made from high-quality coal from Datong, Shanxi, Xinjiang and Ningxia, through carbonization and activation processes. It has a high proportion of mesopores and also features high mechanical strength, cost advantages, and recyclability.
Shanxi and Xinjiang primarily produce bituminous coal, while Ningxia produces anthracite.
As an economical and efficient adsorption material, coal-based granular activated carbon is widely used in industrial gas purification, VOC removal, and wastewater treatment. It is especially suitable for systems with high pollution loads and continuous operation.
Common particle sizes of coal granular activated carbon include: 4*8, 5*10, 6*12, 8*16, 8*30, 12*40, 30*60, and 80*150 mesh.
How is Coal-based Granular Activated Carbon Produced?

Raw Material: High-quality bituminous or anthracite coal is selected (Bituminous coal is used more frequently than anthracite).
Process: After impurities are removed, the raw material is heated and carbonized under air-isolated conditions (typically 400-700℃) to form a preliminary porous structure.
Subsequently, physical steam activation (typically 900-1200℃) is performed, expanding and opening the pores formed during carbonization to create well-developed micropores and mesopores, thereby achieving a large specific surface area and adsorption capacity.
After cooling at room temperature, the activated carbon undergoes crushing, sieving, and dust removal to obtain the finished coal-based granular activated carbon product.
The following processing can also be performed according to the actual application scenario:
- Acid washing of carbon to reduce ash content.
- Impregnation with alkaline, acidic, or metal oxides to achieve targeted removal of specific contaminants.
Packaging can then be done according to customer requirements.

Coal Granular Activated Carbon Advantages
- High mechanical strength, not easily pulverized, wear-resistant and long service life.
- More cost-effective than coconut shell activated carbon in large-scale water treatment.
- In liquid-phase adsorption, granular activated carbon has a smaller particle size and a larger contact area compared to pelletized activated carbon. Therefore, it has a faster and more uniform adsorption efficiency.
- Compared to coal briquettes carbon, coal granular carbon has a higher methylene blue content, although their iodine value is not the highest (IV 1050~1100 mg/g). Methylene blue content can reach 240, and CTC can reach 60.
- Customuize size distribution: Heycarbons can customize the particle size distribution of granular activated carbon according to equipment operating conditions to achieve precise matching with flow rate. This reduces pressure drop and mass transfer resistance, thereby extending the operating cycle and improving overall adsorption performance.
- Easy to handle and regenerate: The particulate form makes it easy to fill and use in adsorption devices such as fixed beds and fluidized beds. After saturation, it can be regenerated through thermal activation for repeated use.
Coal Granulated Activated Carbon Disadvantages
- Compared to coconut shell charcoal, coal carbon has a higher ash content, a lower proportion of micropores, and a weaker ability to adsorb small molecules.
- GAC’s strength is lower than EAC’s, but it’s cheaper.

Granular Activated Carbon Wastewater Treatment
In industrial water treatment systems, coal-based granular activated carbon (IV 500-1050 mg/g) is widely used in the advanced treatment stage, effectively removing COD, BOD, PFAS, heavy metal ions, organic pollutants, and color.
