Activated Carbon For Landfill Leachate Heycarbons Manufacturer From China

Landfill leachate can cause harm to the ecological environment and human health, so it is imperative to use activated carbon to treat landfill leachate.

Why Use Activated Carbon to Treat Landfill Leachate?

what is landfill leachate?

Landfill leachate needs to be treated with activated carbon

Landfill leachate is a high-concentration organic wastewater produced during the landfill or stacking of domestic waste. It is the product of the contact, penetration and decomposition of garbage with water (such as rainfall, groundwater, and wet garbage itself).

It contains organic pollutants (COD, BOD, humic acid, volatile phenols), nitrogen substances (ammonia nitrogen NH₄⁺-N, nitrates), heavy metals, inorganic salts, color and odor.

The production of landfill leachate will pollute surface water and groundwater resources; contain carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic components; it will also cause impact loads on sewage treatment facilities; and it is easy to cause soil salinization and acidification.

Landfill leachate poses a threat to ecosystems and human health, so it needs to be effectively treated.

Activated carbon is mainly used in the deep purification stage of landfill leachate treatment. Due to its large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity, activated carbon can effectively remove pollutants such as organic matter, ammonia nitrogen, pigments, odors, heavy metals, etc., so that landfill leachate meets environmental protection standards and ensures the safety of the water environment.

How Do You Treat Leachate From Landfills?

Treatment of Leachate from the Landfill

The leachate treatment process is divided into three stages: pretreatment, biochemical treatment and deep treatment.

Pretreatment stage

  • Grilles and screens

It’s installed at the water inlet, used to intercept large solid impurities such as large particles, plastic bags, wood chips, etc., to prevent clogging of pipes and damage to equipment.

  • Regulating tank

It’s used to homogenize the water quality and water volume of leachate, adjust the pH value, and buffer water inlet fluctuations. Generally equipped with mechanical stirring or aeration devices to prevent sedimentation and odor.

  • Coagulation and sedimentation

By adding coagulants (such as polyaluminium chloride PAC, polyacrylamide PAM), colloids, organic matter, and some metal ions in the water are aggregated into large particles and precipitated, reducing turbidity and some COD.

  • Oxidation pretreatment

Such as Fenton oxidation, ozone oxidation and other means, chemically decompose refractory organic matter, improve the biodegradability of wastewater, and create good conditions for subsequent biochemical treatment.

Biochemical treatment stage

This stage is the core of the entire process. It mainly uses microorganisms to degrade organic pollutants and nitrogen substances in wastewater, significantly reducing COD, BOD and ammonia nitrogen concentrations.

  • Upflow anaerobic sludge bed UASB

Suitable for high-concentration organic wastewater treatment, relying on anaerobic microorganisms to decompose organic matter into biogas (mainly methane), with the advantages of low energy consumption and low sludge production.

  • A/O or A²/O process (anoxic-aerobic/anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic process)

By adjusting the oxygen environment, the nitrification-denitrification reaction of ammonia nitrogen is achieved, and ammonia nitrogen and some organic pollutants are effectively removed.

  • SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor):

Suitable for small and medium-sized landfills, periodic operation, can integrate homogenization, reaction, and precipitation, flexible operation, and small footprint.

  • MBR (Membrane Bioreactor)

Combines membrane separation with activated sludge method, has excellent effluent quality, can achieve efficient solid-liquid separation, but has high investment and operation costs, and requires regular cleaning of membrane components.

Deep treatment stage

This stage mainly targets the residual small molecular organic matter, salt and chromaticity in the effluent of biochemical treatment to ensure that the effluent water quality meets the standard or can be reused.

  • Nanofiltration (NF)

It is used to intercept divalent and some monovalent ions and small molecular organic matter, and is often used as the pretreatment link of the reverse osmosis RO system.

  • Reverse osmosis (RO)

It uses a high-pressure membrane system to effectively remove more than 99% of soluble salts and most organic matter in wastewater, and the produced water can be reused for greening, cleaning or further purification.

  • Activated carbon adsorption

It uses activated carbon with a high specific surface area to adsorb residual organic matter, pigments and odors in the water as a terminal enhanced treatment process to improve the water quality.

  • Advanced oxidation (such as ozone, Fenton)

It decomposes difficult-to-degrade organic matter through strong oxidation reactions, which is especially suitable for deep purification or emergency treatment of leachate.

What is the Use of Activated Carbon in Wastewater Treatment?

Activated carbon can remove organic pollutants (COD, BOD, humic acid, volatile phenols), nitrogen substances (ammonia nitrogen NH₄⁺-N, nitrates), heavy metals, inorganic salts, color and odor from leachate.

Removal of organic matter

Removal of organic matter (COD, BOD, humic acid, phenols, surfactants): Adsorption of small molecule organic matter that is difficult to degrade and reduction of COD.

Color and odor removal

Removal of color and odor (humic acid, ammonia gas, volatile organic compounds (VOCs)): Improvement of effluent color and removal of odor molecules.

Removal of nitrogen

Removal of trace nitrogen substances (NH₄⁺-N, NO₃⁻): Partial adsorption of ammonia nitrogen and organic nitrogen is possible, but the effect is limited and it is not the main removal method.

Removal of heavy metals

Removal of heavy metal ions (Zn²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺): Adsorption of heavy metals by surface complexation.

Stabilize the quality of effluent water

Stabilize the quality of effluent water: prevent effluent water from failing to meet standards due to load fluctuations, and play a role of “buffering” and “polishing”.

Protect the subsequent membrane system

Protect the subsequent membrane system: reduce membrane pollution, extend membrane life, and adsorb colloids and organic matter in the water before the membrane.
