Why activated carbon need be impregnated Silver(Ag)?
1.Antibacterial and sterilizing
Mechanism: Silver ions (Ag⁺) have strong antibacterial properties, which can destroy the cell walls and cell membranes of bacteria, inhibit the activity of enzymes, and thus cause bacterial death. Activated carbon loaded with silver can continuously release silver ions and maintain a lasting antibacterial effect.
Application: Used in water treatment, air purification, medicine and food industries to prevent the growth and spread of microorganisms.
2. Adsorption of organic matter and heavy metals
Mechanism: Activated carbon has a highly developed pore structure and a huge specific surface area, which can effectively adsorb organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, etc. in water and air. While maintaining a high adsorption capacity, silver-loaded activated carbon can also use silver ions to further enhance the adsorption effect of certain pollutants.
Application: Used to remove organic pollutants and heavy metals in drinking water, industrial wastewater and air, and purify water and air quality.
3. Preventing microbial reproduction
Mechanism: The antibacterial properties of silver ions can prevent the reproduction of microorganisms on the surface and inside the pores of activated carbon, and avoid the failure of activated carbon due to microbial contamination. This characteristic extends the service life and maintenance cycle of activated carbon.
Application: Suitable for water treatment and air purification systems that require long-term use and stable performance, especially circulating water systems and high humidity environments.
4. Deodorization
Mechanism: Silver-loaded activated carbon can not only adsorb and decompose odor molecules in air and water, but silver ions can also further eliminate odors through their chemical reactions.
Application: Used in indoor air purification, deodorization systems in garbage treatment plants and sewage treatment plants to improve environmental sanitation
How to product silver impregnated activated carbon?
1.Select the appropriate silver compound
Common silver compounds include silver nitrate (AgNO₃), silver chloride (AgCl) and silver acetate (AgCH₃COO), of which silver nitrate is the most common because it is easily soluble in water and has a high silver content.
2.Prepare the silver impregnation solution
Dissolve the selected silver compound in an appropriate amount of deionized water or distilled water to prepare a silver solution of a certain concentration.
3.Pretreatment of activated carbon
Washing: Rinse the activated carbon repeatedly in deionized water to remove surface dust and impurities.
Drying: Dry the washed activated carbon in an oven at 100-120°C until it is completely dry.
4.Impregnation process
Add the dried activated carbon to the silver solution to ensure that the silver solution can completely immerse the activated carbon. The impregnation time is generally several hours to 24 hours to ensure that the silver ions can fully enter the pore structure of the activated carbon.
5.Post-treatment
Filtration: Remove the impregnated activated carbon from the silver solution and filter it using filter paper or filter to remove excess solution.
Drying: Put the filtered activated carbon into the oven again and dry it at 100-120°C to ensure that the silver ions are fixed on the surface and in the pores of the activated carbon.
Reduction (optional): The silver-impregnated activated carbon can be reduced as needed. The reduction treatment is usually carried out using hydrogen at 300-400°C to reduce the silver ions to metallic silver and improve its antibacterial properties.
6.Inspection and packaging
Inspection: Perform performance tests on the impregnated activated carbon to ensure that the silver content and distribution are uniform and meet the requirements for use.
Packaging: Package the qualified silver-loaded activated carbon and store it in a dry, light-proof environment to prevent oxidation and failure of silver.
Summary
Through the above steps, the activated carbon can be successfully impregnated with silver, giving it strong antibacterial properties and adsorption capacity. The impregnation process requires precise control of the concentration of the silver solution, impregnation time and subsequent treatment conditions to ensure the quality and effect of the silver-loaded activated carbon.
