Activated Carbon For Soil Improvement Heycarbons Manufacturer From China
Why Use Activated Carbon in Soil?
Benefits of Activated Charcoal in Soil
In soil improvement, activated carbon is essentially a functional soil conditioner. Its functions include:
Activated carbon has a highly porous structure and a large specific surface area, which can increase soil porosity and improve aeration and water retention.
Activated carbon has a strong adsorption capacity and can effectively adsorb heavy metals (such as cadmium, lead, and mercury), pesticide residues, and organic pollutants, reducing the bioavailability of pollutants in the soil.
Soil microorganisms are crucial for plant growth. Activated carbon helps regulate the soil microecology, providing attachment space for microorganisms, supplying beneficial microorganisms with the necessary nutrients and water, and promoting the growth of beneficial bacterial communities.
Activated carbon can improve soil structure and fertility, reduce nutrient leaching, loosen and aerate the soil, and promote plant root growth.
Heycarbons Activated Carbon for Soil Product
Activated carbon product for soil remediation product
Activated carbon used for soil amendment differs from industrial activated carbon and gas-phase/liquid-phase activated carbon. Activated carbon for soil amendment needs to be gentle and safe, delivering nutrients to plants without depleting existing nutrients in the soil.
Generally, wood-based powdered activated carbon (pH 5-8) / coal-based powdered activated carbon (pH 8-11, ash<15%) / small coal granular activated carbon (30-60 mesh or 80-150 mesh) is used for soil amendment.
For activated carbon used for soil amendment, a higher iodine value is not necessarily better; the recommended range is 300-700 mg/g. If the iodine value is too high, the activated carbon may steal nutrients, lock in trace elements, and inhibit root growth.
When used in acidic soils, activated carbon can be slightly alkaline; for saline-alkali soils, the ash content and soluble salts of the activated carbon must be controlled (ash <10%, <15%, low soluble salt content).
Mesoporous and macroporous activated carbons have good soil adaptability and are conducive to the coexistence of water, roots, and microorganisms. When selecting activated carbon, a high ratio of “mesoporous + macroporous” is necessary.
Activated carbon for soil improvement is selected and specifications are customized according to the customer’s actual usage requirements.

Heycarbons Activated Carbon for Soil Customer Case
In recent years, Heycarbons has delivered activated carbon for soil improvement to various customers in different countries. Here are two case studies for your reference.
Activated carbon for soil remediation customer case
A customer wanted to use activated carbon to remove geosmin and sulfur compounds. Heycarbons recommended using powdered activated carbon as a soil conditioner.
Heycarbons activated carbon parameters for soil improvement are as follows:
- Mesh: 200 mesh
- Iodine value: 700 mg/g min.
- Ash content ≤15%
- Moisture ≤10%
Activated carbon for soil improvement customer case
An Italian customer uses activated carbon to remove PFAS from soil. Activated carbon specifications required by the customer:
- Coal powdered activated carbon
- 325-500 mesh
- Iodine value: 900-1000 mg/g
PFAS pollutants are found not only in soil but also in many industrial processes. European and American countries have strict limits on the emission and concentration of PFAS, and activated carbon adsorption is one of the key technologies for treating these substances. Therefore, there is a great demand for activated carbon in European and American countries.

How to Add Activated Carbon to Soil?
The correct order of application for activated carbon in soil amendment is: pretreatment → mixing → soil application → stabilization period → subsequent fertilization.
Activated carbon pretreatment
First, after selecting the appropriate type of activated carbon based on customer needs, it undergoes a two-step pretreatment: pre-wetting and pre-nutrient filling.
Pre-wetting: Activated carbon is highly absorbent. If dry activated carbon is applied directly to the soil, it will draw moisture from the soil. To avoid this, it can be sprayed with water until it is “slightly damp but not dripping.”
Pre-nutrient filling: You can fill activated carbon with diluted urea solution, humic acid solution, or other nutrient solutions in advance to occupy adsorption sites and reduce initial stress on the crop.
Specific Methods and Scenarios for Using Activated Carbon in Soil
Different methods and applications require different types of activated carbon for soil improvement. You can refer to the following text to find activated carbon that suits your needs. Alternatively, you can click the button below to contact Heycarbons directly. Heycarbons can provide you with professional advice, high-quality products, and fast delivery.
Tillage and Incorporation Method
This method is common and suitable for farmland, field crops, and basic soil improvement.
For this purpose, medium-large pore wood-based granular activated carbon (iodine value: 300–600 mg/g, BET: 200–500 m²/g, 8-30 mesh) is recommended.
Application Method: Evenly spread 1-3% (approximately 1–3 tons/acre) of activated carbon by weight, then till the soil to a depth of 15-30cm to ensure thorough mixing with the original soil. Normal fertilization can be carried out 3-7 days after watering has stabilized.
Strip application/hole application
This method is often used for precision remediation and is suitable for applications in orchards, cash crops, and high-value crops.
Coconut shell/wood granular activated carbon (iodine value: 500-800mg/g, 6-18 mesh, pH: 6.5-8.5) is suitable for use.
Application method: Apply in root zone trenches or backfill at designated points. Apply 0.5–1 kg per fruit tree or 2–5% to the root zone soil, adjusting according to actual conditions.
Apply after mixing with organic fertilizer
This method is the safest and can be used in agricultural soils and for the remediation of organic pollutants.
It is recommended to use wood-based activated carbon or low-activation granular activated carbon from nut shells/coconut shells (iodine value 300-500 mg/g, mesh size: 8-30, 20-40, Ash < 10%).
Application method: Premix the activated carbon and organic fertilizer, pile them for 7-14 days, keeping them slightly moist during this process, and then apply them to the soil.
Activated carbon has a very high C/N ratio, and direct application will “compete for nitrogen”. Mixing activated carbon with organic fertilizer before application can solve the nitrogen competition problem, improve fertilizer utilization efficiency, and promote microbial colonization.
Substrate Improvement Method
This method is suitable for greenhouse vegetables, flowers, seedling cultivation, and hydroponics.
It is recommended to use predominantly mesoporous coconut shell granular activated carbon (low activation degree, iodine value: 400-600 mg/g, particle size: 0.5-1 mm). Activated carbon, as a substrate component, can directly contact crop roots.

Biochar Activated Carbon for Soil Improvement
The future development trend of biochar activated carbon is promising.
Biochar activated carbon can be used not only for soil improvement, but also for adsorption, decolorization, refining and purification, etc.
The raw materials for biochar can be wood, straw, or even sugar residue, furfural residue, and traditional Chinese medicine residue.
There are two main production processes for biochar activated carbon:
- Direct production of granular/powdered activated carbon: The raw materials are carbonized and activated to directly obtain granular or powdered activated carbon.
- Molded production of pelletized activated carbon: The raw materials are first carbonized and ground, then bound with a binder and shaped (e.g., extruded into columns), followed by carbonization and activation to obtain columnar activated carbon.
Note: Carbonization alone ≠ Activated carbon.
If the raw materials are only carbonized (without activation), the resulting product is similar to charcoal. Although it has some adsorption capacity, the pores are underdeveloped, and the decolorization (adsorption) effect is poor, far inferior to the finished activated carbon that has undergone activation treatment.
