Activated carbon possesses a highly developed specific surface area (500–1500 m²/g) and abundant microporous structure, and its decolorization of phosphoric acid is primarily based on physical adsorption.
1. Large Specific Surface Area and Pore Structure
Activated carbon has a highly developed pore structure (micropores, mesopores, macropores), providing it with a large specific surface area (typically reaching 500-1500 m²/g or even higher). This provides numerous “sites” for impurity adsorption.
2. Adsorption of Colored Impurities

Next, we will demonstrate a method for decolorizing industrial phosphoric acid:
The phosphoric acid concentration after wet extraction is 40%-45%.
After one concentration, 75% phosphoric acid is obtained; this is pumped to a desulfurizer.
Barium carbonate is added for desulfurization, and after passing desulfurization, the solution enters a settling tank for precipitation.
The supernatant after precipitation is filtered and pumped to a decolorizing tank; when heated to 90-95℃, 1‰-5‰ of wood powdered activated carbon (by volume of the decolorizing tank solution) is added, and the mixture is stirred for 20-45 minutes.
The decolorized solution is filtered, and the resulting clear acid is the qualified finished product – 85% industrial phosphoric acid.
Powdered wood-based activated carbon can be used for phosphoric acid decolorization. If customers require further fine filtration, nutshell or coconut shell granular activated carbon can be used (depending on customer needs).

Activated Carbon Dosage
The optimal dosage should be determined through small-scale laboratory tests. Typically, the dosage of activated carbon is between 0.1% and 0.5% of the phosphoric acid weight, depending on the initial color and impurity content of the phosphoric acid.
Phosphoric acid H3PO4 concentration
Concentration affects viscosity and the solubility of impurities. Generally, a moderate concentration is beneficial for adsorption. Too high a concentration leads to increased viscosity, affecting diffusion and adsorption rates; too low a concentration may increase energy consumption for subsequent evaporation and concentration. Optimization is necessary based on specific circumstances.
pH Value
