															What is Ammonia NH₃?
Ammonia (NH₃) is a colorless, harmful alkaline gas with a pungent and unpleasant odor. It is easily soluble in water to form ammonia water (NH₃·H₂O).
- The emission of ammonia will aggravate air pollution and affect air quality. Ammonia reacts with other pollutants (such as NOx, SOx) to produce secondary pollutants (such as PM2.5 and ozone).
- The presence of ammonia will cause odor. In livestock farms, toilets, garbage stations and other places, ammonia is the main source of odor, affecting the daily lives of staff and surrounding residents.
- Ammonia is harmful to the human body. Low concentrations of ammonia (>5 ppm) can cause sore throat, tearing, and difficulty breathing; high concentrations of ammonia (>50 ppm) severely irritate the respiratory tract and may cause pulmonary edema or even death.
Will activated carbon remove ammonia?
Activated carbon has a developed pore structure and a large specific surface area, and can physically adsorb gas molecules. However, since ammonia is a small polar molecule, its interaction with activated carbon is weak, resulting in limited adsorption capacity, easy saturation, and easy desorption.
Therefore, in order to improve the adsorption efficiency, activated carbon is usually chemically modified:
- The activated carbon is acid-washed. The surface of the acid-modified activated carbon contains a large number of acidic functional groups (such as –COOH, –OH, –C=O), which can enhance the adsorption capacity of alkaline gas ammonia.
- Or phosphates, sulfates or metal oxides are loaded on the surface of activated carbon to enhance the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for alkaline gases.

Activated Carbon For Ammonia Treatment Process
1. Pretreatment of activated carbon remove ammonia
- Washing and drying: Remove ash or impurities and increase specific surface area.
- Acid treatment (surface modification): Use nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. to introduce acidic functional groups to enhance affinity for ammonia.
- Metal loading (optional): Load metal oxides such as CuO and MnO₂ to promote chemical reactions.
2. How to filter ammonia gas from air?
- Fill the modified activated carbon into an adsorption tower or column.
- Ammonia passes through the adsorption bed filled with activated carbon and contacts the surface of the activated carbon.
- Physical adsorption + chemical reaction work together to capture ammonia.
3. Activated carbon regeneration/replacement after saturation
- After saturation, it can be regenerated by heating (thermal regeneration) or water washing (for soluble ammonia salts).
- If it is irreversible chemical adsorption, the activated carbon needs to be replaced.
Factors affecting the efficiency of activated carbon in adsorbing ammonia
- Temperature: Lower temperature is conducive to physical adsorption, and high temperature can lead to ammonia desorption.
- The more acidic functional groups on the surface, the stronger the chemical adsorption capacity.
- Specific surface area and pore size distribution: The more developed the micropores, the greater the adsorption per unit mass.
- Ammonia inlet concentration and flow rate: High concentration can lead to rapid saturation of activated carbon, and too fast flow rate reduces contact time.
- Humidity: High humidity can promote the dissolution and adsorption of ammonia, and may also compete with activated carbon for adsorption sites.

A customer’s waste incineration power plant needs to remove ammonia.
The product specifications used are as follows:
- Powdered activated carbon
- Iodine value 800mg/g

- Powdered activated carbon needs to be sprayed during use, so there are requirements for humidity, preferably ≤10%.

A customer needed to remove ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases. The air volume was 60,000 liters, the operating time was 24 hours, and six tanks were required, each holding one cubic meter of activated carbon. The customer required ammonia concentration to be reduced from 80 mg/m³ to 50 mg/m³, and hydrogen sulfide concentration to be reduced from 30 mg/m³ to 5.5 mg/m³.
In this case, a carbon base impregnated with 10% phosphoric acid and potassium hydroxide, respectively, was suitable. The activated carbon tanks were connected in series.
Due to the high air volume and concentration in this project, the activated carbon usage was small, requiring replacement or regeneration after a maximum of two weeks of use.
